{"id":205,"date":"2013-04-01T21:06:23","date_gmt":"2013-04-01T21:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/virtualworlduk.co.uk\/?p=205"},"modified":"2013-04-01T21:06:23","modified_gmt":"2013-04-01T21:06:23","slug":"part-10-recovery-and-failback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.virtualworlduk.co.uk\/wordp\/part-10-recovery-and-failback\/","title":{"rendered":"Part 10 \u2013 Recovery and Failback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final stage of our process is to go ahead and perform a failover and failback of some virtual machines.\u00a0 This should be performed using an unimportant virtual machine\u2026 please note that during the recovery and failback process, the source virtual machine will be powered off and therefore there will be a network outage to the virtual machine.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><\/li>\n<li style=\"display: inline !important;\">Once you have performed a test recovery, go back to the \u2018Recovery Steps\u2019 section of the SRM portal<\/li>\n<li>Click on \u2018Recovery\u2019 at the top of the screen.\u00a0 You will now see a screen similar to below:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/virtualworlduk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/part10-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-206\" alt=\"part10 - 1\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualworlduk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/part10-1-300x249.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>As you can see the \u2018Recovery\u2019 option has a red alert sign to show that this will impact the usage on the virtual machines.\u00a0 You must tick the box to say that you understand that this will permanently alter the virtual machines and infrastructure at both locations.<\/li>\n<li>You then have to let the application understand whether this is a \u2018Planned Migration\u2019 or \u2018Disaster Recovery\u2019.\u00a0 A planned migration will make sure that all of the latest changes are replicated to the destination location before cutting over, plus the task will cancel if there are errors encountered during the process\u2026 this option also requires the sites to be connected and storage replication to be functioning.<\/li>\n<li>The \u2018Disaster Recovery\u2019 option will attempt to replicate the latest changes to the virtual machines but understands that the source site may not be available and therefore will use the latest replication data available to recover the virtual machines.\u00a0 This will also continue the recovery even if errors are encountered.<\/li>\n<li>In most cases we will probably be using the \u2018Planned Migration\u2019 method and therefore select this and then click \u2018Next\u2019<\/li>\n<li>You will now receive a summary screen, click \u2018Start\u2019 to begin the planned migration<\/li>\n<li>Switch back to the \u2018Recovery Steps\u2019 tab to check the progress\u2026 you can also have a ping test running to the virtual machine to see when the machine becomes available again.<\/li>\n<li>You will also notice that the source virtual machine will be turned off and the destination virtual machine will be turned on.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/virtualworlduk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/part10-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-207\" alt=\"part10 - 2\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualworlduk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/part10-2-300x161.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>You are now able to reverse the protection by clicking the \u2018Reprotect\u2019 button<\/li>\n<li>The reprotect process will commit the results of the recovery and change the protection in reverse.<\/li>\n<li>You will need to click the \u2018I understand that this operation cannot be undone\u2019 and then click the \u2018Next\u2019 button:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/virtualworlduk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/part10-3news.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-221\" alt=\"part10 - 3news\" src=\"http:\/\/virtualworlduk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/part10-3news-300x249.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>You will receive the summary screen once more and clicking the \u2018Start\u2019 button will confirm the reprotect.<\/li>\n<li>Once the reprotect process is complete, you can once again perform a \u2018Test\u2019, \u2018Planned Migration\u2019 or \u2018Disaster Recovery\u2019 as performed earlier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This ends Part 10 of our instructions&#8230;
